| Mocking up the Cafe Racer Tank and the Seat |
|
I always loved the Benelli 360 tank. Its capacity I small, but the shape is very fluid and sexy. Due to some bizarre mounting methods of my Italian brethren, I had to go it alone. There is a small hole in the top of the tank—5/16” to be exact. I drilled and tapped a steel bung and threaded a bolt through the top. Then, welded it into position. I went round and round about how to mount the rear, and in the end, I just welded to 1/8” straps to the tank. Quite the shitty welds; I know. Note that all mounts are isolated from the fame and vibration using rubber disks. As you’ll see later, I went with an all aluminum looking café racer. The seat itself needed to be aluminum, so I built a foam board mockup (hated it), then built a wood buck for the actual piece. I really should have built the buck out of steel so the aluminum would weld cleanly, but live and learn. |
